There is something about someone outside your family that remembers your birthday and makes the effort to make you feel special on your special day! If you are one of those people, then you probably get behind in your birthday greetings in September. It’s not that you have more on your plate or that you are getting forgetful at the beginning of the Fall season, it’s because September is the most common birth month of the whole year, and it just so happens that today (September 9) is the most common birth date.
Back in 2016, statistics organization FiveThirtyEight and data journalist Matt Styles thought they would have a little fund by analyzing data on the average number of births per year from 1994 to 2014. What they discovered is that there are around 12,000 births per day, and September tops the chart with nine out of the 10 most common birthdays. They discovered that the ninth day of the ninth month is the most popular birthday.
One can guess as to the reason for this common occurrence. In the colder months and holiday season couples spend more time indoors and have more time for each other. Pregnancies normally last 38 weeks from conception, so babies born on September 9 would have likely been conceived on December 17. Right around the time for Santa.
The researchers also determined the rarest birthday to be Leap Day (February 29), of course. Other rare birthdays are those on major holidays. This is likely because scheduled inductions and C-sections are avoided on days like Christmas (December 25) and Fourth of July. I love reading through the Psalms because they are the authentic human expressions of our feelings concerning our relationship with the Lord. Good times and bad, the praise and adoration in recognition of who we are and who God is fill each and every lyric.
Psalm 139:13-14 - For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
No one knows us better than God. Throughout the chapter the Psalmist so eloquently describes the efforts the Lord goes through to form each of us. As we think about this truth, we must come to the same conclusion in verse 6 - Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
So in the end, none of us are that unique snowflake we might have thought we were, but you are uniquely and wonderfully made and known by God. Even if you have to share your exact birthday with 12,344 other people!
