No matter how large or small your church might be, it takes a lot of people to get the congregation through the week. Some jobs are obvious and some not so much. Most of these jobs are thankless positions that these individuals happily address as their calling. However, it only takes someone not doing their job for a few weeks to notice how important that person’s work is to the daily operations. Think about garbage removal, or maybe in our church’s case, the person who calls to have the sewer tank pumped. If these tasks are not taken care of the whole assembly suffers.
Then there are other jobs that are more fun but equally difficult. Who changes the sign out front each week with the message that greets each and every person that drives by our church? It is the first impression and witty display that cannot fall to just any person. At our place, Elmer and Hettie Lee Richerson take care of each message. Timely, informative and something to think about in a short amount of space takes a lot of effort and creativity on their part. As the pastor, I enjoy helping them find some of these messages that keep our neighbors entrained and informed.
I do appreciate when others outside our fellowship recognize how hard this job can be. Last week I was going through some old YouTube videos and I came across an old Steve Harvey clip from his show a few years back. In this segment he shares the funniest and most creative church sign messages. Steve told his audience that the people in charge of church signs are the unsung heroes of the Church and it takes a certain person to trust with this responsibility. I don’t know if any of these messages would make it onto the West Haven sign, but the recognition of just how important this job is was worth the look. Check out the Steve Harvey clip here.
Everyone could use a good laugh from time to time and everyone should feel welcomed at church. We don’t need a billboard out front to make people feel welcomed, that task belongs to those that attend. Our message goes out into the community by those who call West Haven home. It is the interactions we have day to day and week to week that cause people to want to attend, but it sure is nice to have a thoughtful message on the board out front! Thanks!!
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22
Serving the Savior,
Bro. Jonathan
